When you listen to radio these days, you may notice that there are fewer new artists strictly doing their own performance music. More and more, techno and all of its variations are becoming the standard for what is popular. We now live in a world where the DJ is the new rock star in an era of home recordings becoming the next big thing through social media, personal promotion and house parties that can create the next celebrities in sound.

Home recording software has done as much to give rise to this type of new music and artists as anything online. With the new technology, many performers have all of the tools at their disposal that they used to find only in professional studios. Bringing this type of technology to the masses means high-level productions can be made possible by more people.

As the Internet has changed many industries and the way they do business, so it has also brought radical change to the music industry. It used to be that record companies hand-picked the performers it would focus on promoting and touring to win fans and gain fame. Today, with online sites to sell or promote music existing for anyone to use, home recording artists can easily introduce their work to a larger scale of audience than previously possible.

These types of new performers can bring their widespread online audience to arenas, whereas used to that required huge amounts of work and fame gained by superstar performers. The Grammys have even acknowledged this growing segment of popularity by featuring performers of it in their annual awards show. With online appeal, these musicians have passionate fans reminiscent of previous celebrities.

A big reason that many of these types of performers have taken hold is that the traditional avenues for promotion have changed. Radio stations are increasingly consolidating efforts and using nationally created programs that work in multiple markets. This leaves little room for new, unproven musicians. Television, another way to promote music for mass appeal, also has turned more to reality based or competition based programming, replacing band videos and old-style promotions with different programs.

Another reason these performers have become successful is through the power of the Internet and social media. Lots of parties revolve around DJs and the mixes they can bring to a club floor. As their work and audience grows, the format lends itself to be heard through lots of different media forms.

Many of these new artists turn to commercial exposure as an effective way to bring their music to a wider audience. Rock stars typically avoided this level of promotion, thinking it was not positive to associate their music to an independent item or brand. Today's artists, creating soundscapes instead of individual hit songs, generally accept this manner for people to hear their music.

There is no doubt that the DJ is the new rock star in this era of music. You may want to check out the scene at a club if you do not believe it. The crowd and excitement surrounding these performances are a new phenomenon that can be amazing to experience first-hand.
