Around the 1400s is when cigars came into existence, and rather quickly became popular as a choice in tobacco use. They have even become a type of art form which is no less a science than an art. Due to the nature of dried and cured plants, tobacco requires special storage which will maintain the original aroma and taste. In order to achieve this, it is important to have one of the Top Quality Cigar Humidors which are on the market.

Because tobacco is cured to be a dried product, it is necessary to provide a specified amount of moisture to prevent it from falling apart, and it can even become bitter and lose its taste. A humidor offsets this problem by maintaining the desired humidity with the assistance of a hygrometer. This device is built into the box and allows a visual inspection of the inside conditions of the humidor for quality results.

Humidors come in all sizes, shapes and descriptions, and you can even get one custom made to suit your particular needs. Some people prefer a fancy box, while other people are more interested in the design and construction of the inside of the unit. Types of wood are usually used because they have the ability to breath, and can even add to the taste of the cigar that has been stored in them.

Spanish Cedar is thought to be superior to other types of cedar because it absorbs more humidity, and gives off a stronger aroma. However, don't assume that it is a tree that grows in Spain, when it is actually imported from Brazil. If the wood is carefully dried before being used in manufacturing, there will not be any resin formation to contend with.

Another wood that is often used as a replacement for Spanish Cedar is the more common American Cedar. This wood is much cheaper and more easily obtained, but is not quite as good at absorbing moisture as its counterpart. However, cedar is a wood that is easily worked, and can result in some very beautiful carvings for decorating the outside of the humidor.

A good replacement for Spanish Cedar is Honduran mahogany, due to its exceptional absorption abilities. However, this tree is known for having worm holes which make it unsuitable for enclosed humidor purposes. When this wood is chosen, it is usually a veneer and works well for maintaining a proper environment. It doesn't have as much flavor a Spanish Cedar but when it is used there is no reason to treat the wood.

When considering what humidors to buy, there is a choice between those made of solid wood and those that are only veneer. Due to the fact that wood expands, solid wooden cabinets could pose issues of stress on the seams which could cause moisture leaks and result in damaging the cigars. Veneers are sufficient at delivering the aromatic effect on the taste of cigars, and could possibly be a better choice than solid woods.

Proper care and storage of cigars depends a lot on where the tobacco was grown and the environment in which it was first harvested and cured. Knowing those details allow the user to manage the humidity content of the humidor to match the best possible settings. When buying a Top Quality Cigar Humidor you should only purchase a unit that is equipped with a good hygrometer built in so that the humidity can be properly monitored.
