Every September, lumberjacks from throughout the country descend on Hoquiam, WA for the Logger's Playday. This day-long festival celebrates over 150 years of logging tradition in the Grays Harbor area. Internationally known, Logger's Playday provides fun, food and competition.

Logging essentially built Grays Harbor County, from the lumber barons of the nineteenth century to the forestry industry of today. In fact, Hoquiam actually means "hungry for wood." Several logging companies are still located in town, exporting lumber and other forest products. Therefore, it is only fitting that this town serve as host to the celebration of the industry.

The first event of Logger's Playday is the Rotary Club's Famous Pancake Feed. After the breakfast, from 10AM until 4PM, celebrants can enjoy the vendor street fair located at 7th and J streets downtown. The street fair includes music, crafts, food and a truck driving competition.

The day includes the Jack Reynvaan Memorial Run, which is open to the public. There is a two mile fun run, a 5K run, and, for the really athletic, a 10K run. The course is mainly flat, with only two steep hills. Registration is at 8am, and the race starts at 9am at the high school track, where it also finishes.

One of the most popular parts of the day is the Logger's Playday Parade. Several organizations participate and it is sponsored by the Elks Lodge. It begins at noon on Early Street and ends on 5th Street. A Park and Ride shuttle transports observers from the Olympic Stadium to downtown for the parade, and local officials recommend finding a spot early due to crowds. Immediately after the parade, at 2PM, is the Salmon Bake.

The high point of Logger's Playday is the competitions at the Olympic Stadium at 6PM. Loggers come from across the country to the area to compete in the games. The events include log rolling, binder throwing (ax throwing), log chopping, and tree climbing as well as other tests of blade and wood skill. One of the most anticipated events is the choker setting competition. During this contest, lumberjacks try to set a steel cable around the logs which are hanging over water. Many participants end up falling and getting soaked. The games provide not only fun for the participants and audience, but also education and a new appreciation for saws and axes and the people who wield them.

A night spent at Hoquiam Castle will add to the logging theme of any trip to Grays Harbor. This bed and breakfast was originally built as a house by lumber baron Robert Lyle. Since then, the Castle has been restored, giving guests a historical atmosphere with all the modern conveniences.

Finishing the day of fun and festivities is the fireworks display at dusk. The Logger's Playday has been giving locals and visitors alike entertainment, food, and education for almost 50 years. Any trip to Hoquiam, WA for Logger's Playday will be time well spent.
