It is thought that there is more snow on the way. Some areas should expect as much as 10 inches. Many people now think we will have a white Christmas this year. Councils are already saying they are running low on grit. They have sent out warnings that they will not be sending out as much grit on the roads. This means the roads over Christmas will be even more treacherous.
The cold - sub zero - weather is said to be here to stay until February 2011, with the Met Office issuing severe weather warnings as the cold Arctic air makes its way towards the country; bringing temperatures of up to -10 degrees and heavy snow showers with it.
Even with this being the second cold spell we have had this year, many drivers have done little to prepare for it according to the AA. 44 per cent of surveyed drivers admit to not doing anything to prepare for the coming cold blast.
From the poll the AA found that 7% thought the gritting would be worse than last year, 41% think it will be about the same. A big 51% expected the gritting to be better than the year before.
Some drivers said they had made preparations for the bad weather. 6% had made emergency plans to stay with someone if the weather turned bad. 19% bought walking boots for the car and 39% had put a snow shovel and blackest in their vehicle.
From those who were surveyed it seemed to show that male drivers were worst at being prepared 45% said they had done nothing to prepare for bad weather. While 51% of those in the 25-34 age groups said they had done no preparation.
Edmund King, AA President said: "We are concerned that some drivers have not made enough preparations for the severe winter conditions on the roads. With good reason Scottish drivers have done most to prepare. Those preparations were warranted as many drivers have experienced horrendous conditions on the roads in Scotland already this winter. A small majority think that highway authorities are better prepared than last year to grit the roads but a large proportion of drivers are still cynical about this. Highway authorities will be under great pressure as their dwindling salt supplies are stretched as the arctic spell continues."
Moneysupermarket.comalong with the AA and RAC has recommended in a recent article that people need to take out breakdown cover. This will help protect as well as give them peace of mind during the coldest winter since 1962/1963.
