When you give someone a gift you are in for some exposure. Normally you need for time to pass until you know if they liked the gift or not. It might be more agonizing if it were the President you were giving the gift to. Upon giving her gift to the president, this Mount Airy native had to sign a visitor's log. The package was of Little Man the president's horse and the guard was then the one in charge of finally delivering it to him.
With her family that she lives in Old National Pike where she paints her animal portraits. With her interest learning towards animals and portraiture she was able to make a business out of it. The fact that she is every enthusiastic with that she does, she was able to make her business do really well.
She draws from the pictures of the animals taken by the owners or her using her pastels. A lot of her horse portraits are from show photos. Every time she does portraits of whatever animal, according to her it never fails to touch her heart. To add to her growing experience working with many animals previously, she now wants to work with fishes and turtles even using oil paints. With the portraits she has been doing she sees to it that the animals are painted in their best shape possible.
It was her idea to paint Little Man and wanting to for so long, she contacted the first lady at last for a few photos. Photos of the president and the horse then came as a reply from the Special Assistant to the President and Director of Correspondence after a month. This was not normally the way she worked having only mailed photos as basis. It was important to her that she goes and looks at the animal in person as this would give her a better idea on what the animal is really like.
Still busy on the project, she then heard the news that Little Man had died. Currently, the only hope she has is that the portrait will be special to the president. Carrying on with what she planned to do, she worked on the portrait and divided it into four. What she did first was to make an outline with pastel that showed the locations of the dark, medium and light shadow tones. It was important that the color cover all the areas hence she needed to use her fingers to blend it in.
Upon adding the background, light blue was the chosen color for Little Man. The artist shares that you want to make the portrait look real. She has spent most of her time getting the image to resemble reality.
She enjoyed making a portrait for Little Man. A horse lover herself, she has had four horses in the past, but is now down to one thoroughbred which she stables in Poolesville. Apart from that she also has a cat, a dog and a goat. She takes pride in the portrait that she has created for the president and is glad she did it.
