Captain's Shield
Easily the most vital part of The Captain's outfit is without a doubt his famous shield. Depending on which version of the character you're attempting to re-create you have a choice between a diamond shaped shield or a round shield. The most common representation is the round shield such as the one which is in use in the 2011 film.
The Head Piece
The headpiece which is worn is a major consideration to bear in mind regarding the difference between the two versions of the costume. While Captain America has always worn a one-piece cowl which covers his entire head and neck, the movie version of the character simply wears a standard military battle helmet covered in blue grey leather which extends over the top half of the face to form a mask. It should also be noted that the movie version of the headpiece lacks the traditional leather wings, rather shows them as painted on the helmet.
The Boots
The captain's boots and gloves are also significantly different between the two versions. In the film these items are made of brown leather and have a distinctive military appearance. In fact, the boots are shown as 32 lace military combat boots. This is a major differentiation from the traditional red spandex used for these items and graphic novels.
The Pants
The lower half of the costume varies greatly between the two versions. In the graphic novels is a bright blue spandex leotards are worn. This of course can be an uncomfortable situation for men who might not be confident in their masculinity or physique. In this case, perhaps the film version, which uses blue gray military battle pants is best.
The Top
The look of the upper half of the uniform is very similar between the two versions. The graphic novel version of the suit is made of red, white, and blue spandex with muscle shaped armor plates beneath. In the film version, this is replaced with a standard military uniform top which is decorated with the red, white, and blue theme and takes advantage of standard body armor.
Accessories
When it comes to accessories and weaponry it is very important that one remembers that the graphic novel version of the character never once possessed a gun. In the film however the character is seen wearing a thigh mounted leather holster and regularly using a side arm. In order to maintain authenticity between the two is vital that this key factor not be overlooked.
When preparing to put together or purchase your own costume from the Captain America movie it's important that you keep the information presented here in mind. There are key differences between the two versions that must be adhered to carefully. Captain America has been a fan favorite for more than 60 years and now with your very own costume you can join the adventure.
