Generally there are numerous different recording formats and whilst most will perform on alternative players to the one you record on, you cannot guarantee this.

Hard Disk v DVD Recorder

The clear appeal of the disk recorder is that you don't have to continue purchasing disks to record on. If you tend to be the type of person that simply wants to catch up on programmes and not store them, then the hard disk design of machine is the one for you.

If you want to keep programmes indefinitely or pass them on to other people, in that case the DVD style recorder is better.

Conclusion

For the majority of people, a Freeview HD Recorder is the far better choice. It's future proof and provides all the wonderful features just like series record that you would require from a modern set-top box.

Be mindful that you additionally require an HD ready tv set to receive the superior picture quality. These days, there are many packages put together by the main shops that give you both the box and the TV.
