Crisp, cool evenings and smooth tunes fill Wimington's air as fans from across the area converge on the area for the North Carolina Jazz Festival. This event features some well-known legends and some horizon and local artist who are worth listening too. There are several other types of activities for people to enjoy. There are work shops, art raffles and other activities during the three day event.

The musical genre which started at the beginning of the 20th century in predominantly black areas of the south has grown larger than what anyone could have predicted. It draws influences from European and African music amongst other genres. And the style and sound has developed and evolved, it has started drawing new interest from many different types of people from all over the globe.

The NC event celebrating this popular music started in 1980 when a local dermatologist named Dr. Harry VanVelsor, who was a die-hard jazz lover, decided to highlight his favorite type of music and share it with others through a large scale event. Over the years the celebration has grown and has become a major and anticipated event for the fans of the music genre. People from all over area come together to enjoy the lively music, good food and even some dancing on the dance floor.

Legendary names in the business such as Johnny Frigo, Art Hodes, Kenny Davern, Keter Betts, Milt Hinton, Tony DiNicola, and Bobby Rosengarden have graced the stages at this event. Current favorites from the national and international scene are often popular acts and include artist such as Wycliffe Gordon, Duke Heitger and Ken Peplowski and other world-renown artist who have also appeared. Sharing the stage with these well-known names are some local musicians who have made a name for themselves around the region and horizon artists from around the world.

The celebration coordinators have worked hard to partner with local schools in order to bring this genre to school aged children. They often offer concerts and clinics for junior high school aged children either at the school or another venue. They have a strings and wind clinic which all help kids learn some interesting new musical tricks.
