In school, a pal gave me his electric bicycle for a year while he journeyed abroad. In the beginning, I didn't have a clue that there were electric powered bikes, but I was in need of transportation and I knew how to ride a bike. And so I wondered why not?My friend explained that he had found a small motorcycle on eBay, removed the engine and gas tank. After that he added a new motor with batteries. He assured me that this was perfectly secure and was maintenance free. When I first took a look at the bike, It seemed to be someone's kid toy. When I first stood on top of it, it felt unsteady. The fact that it weighed less than I weigh didn't help matters. But I am sure most of the weight of a motorcycle is due to the gas tank and engine.

Driving the electrical powered edition of a motorcycle was a little difficult at first. There was a throttle to go or go faster. Once you generate the throttle, you just coasts unless you hit on the brakes. There is no clutch. It took me a while to learn how to use a clutch on a bike and unlearning at first seemed to be difficult. I continued to use the clutch in the middle of a ride, or to modify equipment. A few times I was so engaged I considered I would harm. But after a few days, I simply ignored the clutch and just enjoyed the ride. I also understood that the thing could go really fast very quickly. If you push the throttle to maximum, you could go from standing still to 50 miles per hour in a couple of seconds.

The other thing about an electric motorcycle is that there is almost no noise. In the first place it might be confusing, especially if you are looking to show off. But is indeed awesome to listen the road around you on silent country streets. It was like riding around on a very fast bicycle except you didn't have to pedal.Looking back, it was probably safer too, there are a lot of times that you don't hear cars coming behind you when you are riding a gas powered bike.

The bike wasn't perfect however. Whatever I did, I couldn't get it going above 50 mph. Even though I rode it downhill, it was impossible to get about the mid 60s. I believe this was due to the inadequate aerodynamics of the motorcycle and not native to all electric bikes. In addition, the bike couldn't go that far on a full charge, most times I could only get 40 miles before I ran out of juice. The worst part is I could never really tell how full the batteries were.Luckily I had a short commute but I carried a power cable to stop for a bite and a charge if I thought I was running low on longer trips..The worst was that the bike tires were like scooter tires. Since the bicycle had to be mild, my buddy had put unique wheels on it. I realized this when I blew a wheel on a nail and thee tire could not be repaired. Luckily I found some rim offers and got a couple of substitute tires fairly at low expenses.

Overall though, the electric motorcycle was pretty awesome. I never had to pay for gas and though I had to price it every night, I only saw a little jump in my electric bill. Even better I never had to fear about an oil modify or air filter systems etc.The bike was essentially maintenance free. The motorbike always worked- but not when I damaged a wire loose.Overall, I look back and have to thank my friend. Not only did he help me out of a jam when I required it, but also revealed me the long run of riding a motorcycle.
