For those of you who want to make films but are wondering what the best way to make great documentaries is, read on. The answer is simpler than you may think. When a film-maker decides to put together a good documentary, there are specific things that he needs to do and certain ways to make his film stand out in the crowd.

To begin with, the most important quality of a good documentary is the story it tells. You can't make a film without a solid, gripping, engaging story and this is most often the story of a person, of his life and his legacy. Something needs to make your subject different and worth examining, so make sure you give your audience an amazing person's tale.

Besides this, you should look into staying as out of your subject's story as possible. Make sure you approach everything from an objective side, don't make too clear who you're supporting and why. If your opinions are strong, still try to keep an open mind and explore the other sides of the coin.

As a matter of fact, try to remain as out of this as possible. Although this is often difficult and the story you're telling might be affecting you in many different ways, you still need to keep an open mind. Stay objective and let your film speak for itself rather than tell your audience what they should believe in.

Sometimes less is more. The camera, pictures, interviews and other material can show more than words ever could. This is exactly why a good documentary is often the one that lets its material speak for itself. Big declarations many times work against the film's credibility.

Show, don't tell. This is the ultimate rule in film-making and great documentaries rely even more on this rule. So show your audience what you think, but always refrain from telling them what they should think. This will work in your favor in the long run.
