The Columbia Museum of Art is South Carolina's top notch art museum. It showcases a great selection of European and American fine and decorative arts. The art gallery also features a choice of modern and current art, glassware, and 20th century style and design sections.

The museum has taken its latest website in the downtown area of Columbia since 1988. An impressive renovation transformed an old downtown department store into streamlined exhibition space. The museum's collection is available in 25 galleries. There is also meeting space, an auditorium, plus an art glass studio. The atrium within the building retains one of the museum's latest acquisitions, the beautiful Chihuly Chandelier. Developed in shades of orange, red, and gold by distinguished glass artisan Dale Chihuly, the 14 foot high glass sculpture is the centerpiece from the atrium.

The Columbia Museum of Art's permanent collection incorporates European works coming from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as 18th century artwork. Pieces consist of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. Highlights of the collection incorporate works by Italian artists Botticelli and Tintoretto. The museum's American selection contains landscapes and portraits from the 18th and 19th centuries. Decorative arts within the permanent collection contain items of Wedgewood, Tiffany lamps, porcelain, and furniture.

The museum hosts several unique exhibitions each year. A significant exhibition scheduled for summer season 2011 highlights the art of Sigmund Abeles, a modern artisan brought up in South Carolina. The exhibit will run from June 17 through October 23. Amongst the other specific exhibitions this summer season is Rembrandt: From Sacred to Profane, a collection of Rembrandt etchings. The exhibition runs from May 17 through August 21. In addition Michael Kenna: Venezia, a selection of black and white photographs of Venice, is scheduled to run from July 16 through October 23.

Totally free docent led tours in the museum's highlights are provided on Sundays at 2pm. Docents also lead free tours of the unique exhibitions on Saturdays at 1pm. The museum shows films associated to its collection and specific exhibitions. Nearly all of these are free with museum entrance. The Museum Shop delivers a variety of gift and educational items which includes posters, textbooks, jewelry, pottery, glass, and toys.

The Columbia Museum of Art is located at 1515 Main Street in downtown Columbia. The museum is open Tuesday-Friday from 11am-5pm, Saturday from 10am-5pm, and Sunday from noon-5pm. The museum is closed on Mondays. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and military personnel, and $5 for college students. Youngsters age 5 and below are admitted totally free. Visitors to South Carolina's capital need to permit time for a stop at the Columbia Museum of Art.
