Dr Who fans are often very quick to say which Doctors they weren't keen on, but when asked to decide their favourite, well that's where it can get complicated. With eleven actors playing eleven unique Dr Whos (William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith - in that order) who comes out on top?
The current generation who were reintroduced to this BBC1 TV drama in 2005 have only ever know three Doctors; Eccelstone, Tennant and Smith. Out of these, most Dr Who critics agree that the so-far longest standing Doctor of these three, Tennant, has brought the most to this role. Playing the tenth Doctor, Tennant portrayed him as cheeky, light-hearted and witty character which it's probably fair to say most people found refreshing.
Out of the first eight Dr Whos, for many years Tom Baker was hailed as the best Dr Who. As the fourth Doctor, Baker brought eccentricity to the character as well as the long, knitted scarf people still envisage Dr Who wearing. This bohemian version of the Doctor boosted the viewing figures of the programme between 1974 and 1981, with between 8-11 million people tuning in every week (and over 16 million in his final episode).
Peter Davison and Patrick Troughton have both also topped various Dr Who polls in the past, but one name that comes up time and time again as the best Dr Who is David Tennant. The current generation were reintroduced to Doctor Who in 2005 and have really only ever known three Doctors; Eccelstone, Tennant and Smith. Not just with advances in technology on his side, this modern Dr Who was energetic, intelligent, loveable and slightly anarchic, but most of all, just your everyday time-travelling humanoid alien you could relate to.
