Manchester is an incredibly important city. It is the jewel of the North West of England, and has a well earned reputation as one of the UK's centres of economy and culture. It was the first industrialised city, and still is a hub of activity, both in terms of business, as well as media and art. It was also been central to the UK's film industry, with many great films either shot there.
Manchester has been a big part of film right from the beginning. In 1928, the second Frank Randle film, directed by John E Blakely, Two Little Drummer Boys was shot in Manchester. And then, throughout the rest of the history of film, Manchester has been a top choice for filmmakers, for the backdrop to their films.
The 60s saw many great films use Manchester as their backdrop. The 1961 A Taste of Honey, by Tony Richardson, for example, is still a well loved film, and was filmed in many places across Manchester. Then there is Hell is a City, which stars Stanley Baxter who is a police man whose aim is to clean up the streets of Manchester. This is another much loved film with a distinctively Mancunian setting.
More recently, there have been many hit block busters that have, at least, had some of their scenes shot in Manchester. Captain America, released last year, has the infamous Marvel super hero chase someone through the streets of Manchester. Another claim to fame is Alfie, staring Jude Law, which was filmed in Manchester's 'Northern Quarter' to simulate a New York setting.
But one of the best films featuring Manchester is Michael Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People. Steve Coogan gives a comedic performance of Anthony H Wilson, founder of Factory Records, taking us through the profound effect he had on Manchester's 'Madchester' scene in the 80s and 90s.
