Most people would agree that laughter is good for you in every possible way. Scientific research on laughter suggests that there are many exceptional benefits to a good sense of humor and a good laugh. The old expression, "laughter is the best medicine", is not just a clich, but has real scientific merit.
On a recent road trip, I had the opportunity to visit our state-operated rest stops. Stopping to rest my eyes and relieve my bladder, I got the opportunity for a real "drop it" look at our litter-leaving way of life. The ladies bathrooms were appalling! Paper products, plastic products and other products littered the floors.
Is there an energy crunch going on in the movement of the human hand, demanding that toilet tissue be dropped where used rather than find its way beneath a bottom; and paper towels lie sodden a foot from trash bins? I won't even address the bottles and cans and other very suspicious items decorating the corners of these rooms.
Now I realize that if I had my life to live over again, I would do things differently. If I could be a kid again, I would have the presence of mind to speak up for myself. When I was about 4 or 5 years old my mother said to me "I wish I never had you"! In a "re-do" of that moment I would have said, "But Mom, instead of you having me, I had you!" Or perhaps I could have said in response to "I wish I never had you", "Please Mom, could you say that without the negative, could you say what you wish you did have"?
I recall once being the center of attention for a language mistake I innocently made. That language mistake may have set me on the course to what has become my life pattern of being misunderstood and/or laughed at for turning things around, "topsy turvy". We were all eating corn on the cob and I asked for more cob on the corn! I later learned there is a ACADEMIC term for what I said: CHIASMUS!
Humor "breaks the ice" and can help people get to know each other more easily. When meeting someone for the first time it is always better to share a laugh than a complaint. How to develop a sense of humor. Try becoming friendlier: Everyday make it a goal to engage a stranger (or friend or family member) with a "good morning", "how are you?" or a "you look great today". Making small positive connections with others lifts the spirits and creates an atmosphere for humor to develop.. Smile often: Whenever you make eye contact with someone smile at them. It is a small pleasantry that helps to keep morale and spirits high. Learn to laugh everyday: Listen to your favorite comedian, associate with people who enjoy humor, try to view things from a humorous perspective and simply "lighten up"!
I was to be the first (?) person to endure the unendurable and I was to be the first (?) person to endure the unendurable WITHOUT any benefits to any endurance I endured! But I fooled everyone, I did get a benefit! I can laugh at almost everyone and everything! I PAY MYSELF BACK WITH HUMOR! It is an unrecognized limitless "currency!" I laugh all the time at everyone who criticises, or misunderstands or laughs AT ME, (there are some people who laugh WITH me, as I hope, dear reader you are doing.)
