What is one of the most utilized tools for casting or to get an idea of an actor's talent? Monologues of course. If you are serious about your craft you should build a repertoire of monologues of all types and emotional range.

So how do you go about selecting the right monologue for you? What are the considerations you should make?

1. Select a character from a play that is similar to you. If you can describe this character and see yourself then it's a good start.

2. Choose a type that matches the material you are auditioning for. This may go without saying but if you are auditioning for a comedy prepare something funny, if you are auditioning for a drama, choose a dramatic piece.

3. What type are you? Get very specific in choosing a character that has the same type of qualities you have.

4. Casting directors appreciate when actors perform something they have never heard before. Avoid authors that everybody knows unless you really connect to the material in a special way. You can find inspiring monologues even in little known theatre productions, books, independent films and television shows.

5. Have you ever read, watched a play, book or movie over and over again because you relate to it and are passionate about it? Look for pieces there first before you try to dig new material.

6. Don't abuse the time casting directors give you to show them what you got. Time is valuable and casting directors will not be pleased if you waste their time.

What you are selling in an audition is yourself. Make sure you select the right monologue for you.

When choosing a monologue, don't just pick something that you think it's interesting or funny, pick something that fits you and gives a clear representation of who you are or how you want to present yourself to your audience.
