You're getting a tattoo and it's going to be your boy (or girl) friend's name across your chest with hearts and birds. Stop right there! Let's talk about how to choose a tattoo you won't regret.

Before you insist that you are in "love", take some time to think about what you are doing. Essentially a tattoo is forever as they are applied beneath several layers of skin with a needle. And yes, that means they hurt! Medical removal is even more painful.

Tattoo decisions should be made after careful consideration and not on a whim. Look at this decision as one you will have to live with for eternity and then think about whether you will still enjoy the ink forty years from now. Here are a few questions you should ask yourself before settling on a tattoo design.

1) Motivation- Why are you considering ink? For some people it is a matter of self-expression or marking a life event. Perhaps you want to pay tribute to an important area of your life, such as love of wolves, dogs, cats or cars.

Maybe you do love someone and you want them to see that in a very permanent way. Most agree that it's fine to have the names of children, grandkids, parents, etc. But most also agree that tattooing the name of your one true love (Michael Forever) might be a problem if your one true love turns out not to be.

Are all your friends getting tattoos, so you want one as well? If so, stop right there and reconsider. A tattoo is something you should get only if you truly want one. Some people see them as a personal challenge or just something new and exciting, which is fine as long as you consider the tattoo design carefully.

2) Love it now and later? Think about the possibilities, is there one thing you love today that you have no doubts you will still love when you are 50-60 years old? Maybe you and your dad spent a lot of time on an old antique car or you have loved furry critters all your life, either of these could be a great base design.

As stated above, the names of your kids or grandkids are a pretty safe choice. Perhaps you feel connected to Chinese culture and would like a dragon or yin and yang symbol, you likely will not regret these choices.

What about an Olympic Symbol? Hey, if you are an athlete go for it! See it is all about what personally rocks your world, both today and tomorrow. Some people even choose an insanely cool tattoo simply because it is cool, but that is their personality.

Remember one very important thing, your passions and interests will change, as you grow older. It is not uncommon to look at a tattoo from a few years back only to realize it no longer carries the same meaning. This is okay, as long as what it once meant is something you can feel good about.

3.) Finally, ask yourself, "Am I going to be embarrassed when I explain this to my grandkids, parents or the curious neighbor down the street?" If you think you might feel stupid explaining your tattoo (and by the way, you are not required to explain your tattoo choices to anyone), you may want to rethink it.

Now, go looking for ideas. All tattoo shops have books full of "flash." Flash is just a word for tattoo designs. You can look through tattoo magazines, art magazines, or come up with something on your own.

Even if all you have is a rudimentary idea of what you want, you can take this to a good tattoo artist who can then add artistic skills creating a one of a kind design. The best thing you can do before you get a tattoo is ask yourself three basic questions, what is important to you, what would you like to express and why do you want a tat.
