In our last article we introduced you to the three major styles of wedding photography that dominate the scene right now. These are the traditional, photojournalist and combined styles. One of these styles is right for your wedding and it's important to know the difference between these styles so you can make a choice that fits for your own personal aesthetic. You'll have to live with your wedding images for a long time.

The traditional style has been around since wedding photography began decades ago. It developed during the tough depression and World War II eras and leveraged the beautiful lighting setups of the great movies of the time. Recall those wonderful old portraits of Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Becall and Audrey Hepburn where the light was directional and created dramatic images.

The lighting in these portraits projected what was considered high style at the time. The subject's pose was highly choreographed by putting them in exactly the correct position to use the lights set up by the photographer. Makeup and hairstyling was perfect. And the photographer used a few tricks along the way like gel on the lens edges to create a soft, blurry effect. Making these photographs was work for the subjects and time consuming for all concerned.

The major benefit to securing a photographer using the traditional style is knowing what you will be getting in advance. The traditional photographer will work intensely to make sure that he recreates his signature style for your wedding. Lighting, makeup and poses will all be perfect. And, because he'll be using a shot, list you will be sure every important, traditional event at your wedding will be photographed.

One disadvantage to the traditional style is the control that the photographer must impose on your wedding. Creating all those highly structured photos requires time and precision. You'll need to work with your photographer to help him create his look. This takes you away from your guests and the flow of the wedding for a serious amount of time.

Another problem with traditional photography is missed opportunities. With your photographer spending his time and effort creating the photos on his shot list his attention will not be on all the emotional interactions between the wedding party, the parents and the cherished guests. You need to consider this as a tradeoff.

The wedding photojournalist employs a completely different approach. The best wedding photojournalists quite often earned their stripes" working in the newspaper or magazine business. This means they were assigned to breaking news events or feature articles. The essence in this type of photography is to catch human emotion as it happens and use the surroundings to make an artistic statement in the photos.

Photojournalists returned their photos to a professional picture editor. These editors are demanding and know the quality of the photos they are looking at. There is no place to hide for this style of photographer. They had to be good or they would be looking for a different line of work.

Quick reactions are required to be a good photojournalist. Attention to the events happening around them is essential to their trade and a good wedding photojournalist will deliver you many rare and unique views of your big day.

Lively actions photos is the advantage of using a wedding photojournalist. They are constantly on the lookout for unique and special moments as your wedding progresses. The best ones blend into the crowd and you won't know they are working.

The downside to the wedding photojournalist is he/she doesn't work from a shot list. If requested he will take standard set-up shots but he will use the venue's features to create an interesting set of more formal photos. The upside to wedding photojournalism is the energy level of the photos. Since these photos are being captured when interesting things are happening the energy exuding from the subjects is transferred to the photos. A set of photos created by a good photojournalist will be a unique and lively recording of your wedding.

The most popular style now is wedding photojournalism. Brides are asking for it and traditional wedding photographers are claiming they can deliver it along with their prepared set up photos. Some photographers can accomplish this and some cannot. It's a difficult task to be good at both styles of photographer but it's not impossible.

Make your wedding photographer style choice based on your own personal tastes in art. Be true to your instincts and the right choice will be obvious.
