Epic fantasy novels are an especially interesting group of books. They have seen all levels of success from being cult classics to have big-screen adaptations created with multi-million dollar budgets. If you are a writer - new or old - you may be curious as to what helps create a good story in this genre.

You should try focusing especially hard on the world you are making. Those who read novels like this are after an adventure or a great escape. It is the writer's job to construct a universe which contrasts starkly with the one in which we live - not only is it necessary, it's expected.

There are some common threads among these stories, such as different races. It is not uncommon for things like elves, orcs, trolls, ghosts, and so on to be present within a fictional universe, but even then they are not necessarily all the same. Determining something as simple as whether a given race is generally good or generally evil can have a massive impact on your storyline.

This is why it is so important to develop an eye for details. At the same time make sure to avoid the mistake of weighing your reader down with too much description at one time. Though tastes can vary, it is still considered a common mistake for writers to spend too much time painting every detail of a picture for his audience. Leave some room for their imagination.

A good way to consider just how much to have in and how much to leave out is to actually read some of the more popular books. You're not trying to take actual stories from them, but instead understand where the author backed off and let his readership fill in details. It is important that readers be able to insert their own perception into the story to make it their own experience.

Hopefully Epic Fantasy Novels do not seem so daunting in their construction. It will take a good deal of brainstorming and you will probably want to take things slowly at first, but there are infinite worlds yet to be discovered. Stay focused and take it at your own pace.
