Stories and myths about monstrous dragons and their supernatural abilities have kept children awake and agog throughout the centuries. Various versions of these winged, magical creatures exist in folklore and tales of all cultures. Nobody knows dragons better than children, because only kids have the ability to speak and understand dragon language.

Children love dragon stories and all kids can relate to these mythical creatures that are so creatively portrayed in a childrens book about dragons. Huge, scary dragons appeal to the heroic instinct of boys who fantasize about slaying them. Girls dream about being rescued from these monsters by a handsome knight who wants to marry them.

Dragons must have some very special qualities to make them so popular. Young and old enjoy dragon stories. One can only wonder why mankind remain so intrigued by a phantom character that is not even real.

But then again, who said dragons are not real? There is no real proof that they never existed and may even still be around! Maybe, just maybe, they are among us, but can only be seen through the eyes of a child . . .

Dragons come in many shapes and sizes. Some are kind, some are bad. They can be gentle giants, or cruel, man-eating monsters. In the realm where giants live, there are no human laws or limits - it's a dragon dreamworld!

Today's kids can pick and choose from a wide variety of draconian characters portrayed in games, books and various popular articles. These fantasy characters have catchy names and magic powers that appeal to every child's imagination. Some dragons are loving, gentle heroes, while others are fierce, scary monsters. Because only children can apparently see them, they paint, draw and sketch them as they see them in their own, unique mind's eye. That's why there are more dragons today than ever before!

Clever artists and illustrators know there is no scientific proof of what a dragon truly looks like, and that only children can see them. That's why they listen to kids and study children's drawings of dragons to get an idea of how to portray them. Unlike in the human world, dragons can be any color, size or shape. Some can fly, while others have long legs and huge claws to jump across mountains and oceans. Cruel, man eating dragons have horns and razor sharp teeth, while baby dragons are cute and cuddly.

Kids will tell you that baby dragons come from huge eggs. When they are ready to be born, they crawl out of the egg and start walking or flying straight away. Good dragons always have to protect themselves and the universe from the cruel, fire-spitting monsters and in the world of dragons, the good always wins!

It is still a mystery where dragons come from and where they live. Tales from the Middle Ages portray them as cruel, blood-thirsty land dwelling man eaters. In the days of Christopher Columbus, it was believed that they live in the sea. Most dragons have huge wings, indicating that they might even live somewhere up high in the sky or on another planet from where they watch and visit us.

Are dragons just a figment of human imagination, kept alive by embroidered myths about huge prehistoric animals such as dinosaurs? Or is it possible that they truly exist and only expose themselves to children? Who knows? As long as they capture the imagination and inspire imaginative stories, dragons will be with us!
