Sooner or later as a beat maker, you'll hit a point after making enough beats where your beats will start to sound very similar to each other and you'll eventually get sick of making the same beat over again. When you reach this point, beat making can sometimes start to feel like a chore and you will start to feel uninspired. However, it is quite natural to feel that way and it is really part of the process. Today, we are going to discuss a few ways to stay inspired so that you can continue to grow as a beat maker.

Before we jump into a few techniques to stay inspired, it is important to note that being frustrated with your beats sounding uninspired is actually a good thing. Think about it like this, if you weren't frustrated with the current state of your beats, what would cause you to improve upon them? Nothing. If you were satisfied, you would keep doing things the same way and you would keep making the same beats. Now that you've embraced your inner feelings of frustration, here are a few things you can do to stay inspired.

Listen to new music: Listening to a new song that you fall in love with can restore your passion for music and give you new musical ideas for you to place with. However, don't just listen to music that you always listen. Experiment with different genres of music and go beyond the bounds of hip-hop. If you notice, truly great producers like Dr. Dre and Timbaland have their unique sound because they don't just sample soul and funk records. They sample ethnic records, jazz, and classical etc. The world of music is much bigger than hip-hop so go out and listen.

Get new sounds: Have you been relying on the same sounds from your keyboard or vst synths? If so, it's no wonder your beats sound the same. When you use the same subset of sounds over and over again, your beats will start to sound the same and you'll quickly lose inspiration. It's certainly fine to have an arsenal of your favorite sounds, but the important thing is that you continually build and add to this arsenal to keep your sound fresh.

Experiment w/new effects: Oftentimes, buying new sounds aren't necessary because we haven't gotten the most out of the sounds that we have at our disposal. By simply applying effects to existing sounds, we can breathe new life into sounds that would otherwise be uninteresting and stale. Don't be afraid to go beyond reverb, eq, and standard effects. Experiment with programs like CamelSpace and Camel Phat and you'll be surprised the unique sounds that come out of it.

The important thing to remember when you reach that wall is to push through! When you reach the other side, you will be a more competent and versatile beat maker. Use a few of these techniques above to help you stay inspired.
