If you're the host of such a celebration it will really bring the feel of Bavaria and the Alps to life for your guests if you're serving frosty brews wearing such an costume.

The normal Oktoberfest serving dress is based on the Dirndl. This is a traditional dress for women in Southern Germany plus many of the nations that can be found around the Alps range of mountains. So this includes areas of Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

The Dirndl was firstly a peasant style dress or even a housewives dress. The people who wore such gear may be working on their family farms or in the home on regular chores. The Dirndl was considered the right general purpose dress for doing all forms of odd jobs from milking cows to sweeping the floor.

It was made from a peasant style chemise, normally in a plain white color with ruffled, short sleeves. Around the chemise will be a lace up bodice that could be loosened or tightened depending on what you were doing or if the weather was tepid. A long, ankle length skirt was the next part of the Dirndl dress. This skirt was made of a plain dyed, sturdy fabric that might last for years and plenty of heavy use. An apron was roughly obligatory for any dirndl costume and would come in useful for all sorts of tasks. It'd also keep the skirt from getting grubby at times.

The female servers at the Oktoberfest in the main put on something like the dirndl although as they're consumer facing type positions the costumes they wear are typically a tad more risque. The skirt is often shorter plus there could be a lace slip underneath to provide it a tad of bounce and definition.

All kinds of derivations on the Bavarian serving costume have been created. A few are quite authentic while others have just a few similarities.
