One of the biggest scourges of modern society is the large amount of waste generated by consumers and industry. Many expert studies have shown that the very future of the planet is dependent upon the ability of mankind to clean up after itself. Many different types of materials can be made useful again by means of recycling. Scrap cars are no exception. They can play an important role in lessening the mining of scarce mineral resources.

Vehicles that end up in waste yards come from various different sources. Many vehicles that were involved in serious accidents can never be repaired again. In some cases, vehicle owners realize that it is no longer viable to repair old automobiles. Police also regularly find abandoned vehicles. Local authorities also endeavor to minimize the clogging of landfill sites by selling bulky objects as waste.

Most of these vehicles still have considerable value. In many cases, some components that are still serviceable can be harvested and sold as second hand parts. This market has become a large industry in itself. Those parts of the vehicle that is of no further use to individuals can be recycled or used for other purposes. Old tires, for example have many useful applications.

Individual sellers need to take care when they sell a vehicle to a waste dealer. Many unscrupulous dealers offer very small amounts and some will even charge for towing the vehicle. It may be well worth it to try and remove all useful and working components before selling the automobile. In this way more revenue can be gained.

This industry has grown very large and it provides thousands of jobs. Side industries also benefit. In most cases, recycled materials cost less than materials produced directly from natural sources. In the past, derelict vehicles made up a large component of landfill sites. The removal of vehicles from these sites has resulted in significant cost savings and a reduction in space necessary to manage and store waste.

The benefits to the environment are enormous. Recycling results in very large reductions in the use of scarce and expensive natural resources. Many experts point out that efficient recycling produce almost as much metal as is needed by the automotive industry. Less water and energy is consumed and the pressure on the environment is considerably less. Recycling also play an important role in helping to curb water, air and soil pollution.

Not all defunct vehicles are recycled. Many find interesting and useful lives in another form. In many parts of the world, artificial coral reefs are created by dumping large numbers of old vehicles into the sea. While the process is controversial, many positive results are recorded. Innovative artists have produced furniture, toys and even fine art from old automobiles.

Scrap cars cannot be wished away. By making economical use of them, mankind not only lessen his disastrous impact on the environment, but also provide economic benefits to many people and industries. Their many uses serves as an excellent example of how potentially harmful and useless materials can be turned into a definite benefit.
