Windshield repair kits work very well for fixing the damage done by a small bit of rock chipping the glass. They will not work so wonderfully on a crack spreading across the screen. No matter what sort of difficulty you have to deal with, it needs to be done in the shade. If the glass gets too warm, the resin may dry before you can work it.
The initial order of business is to pick all the remaining fragments of glass from the chip by use of a razor blade. After you have gotten the fragments out this way, use cloth and a cleaner for glass to clean the area up. It must be allowed to dry totally before you go on.
Position the suction cup tool from the kit so that the center part is just above the problem zone. Hand screw the repair tube tightly into this center part. The end of the tube has to be right over the problem zone. Sit inside your car to make sure that you have positioned the tube in exactly the right position.
Open up your resin tube and press out three or four drops into this repair tube. Waste no time to insert the provided plunger into the repair unit. Screw the plunger virtually all the way in. This is how pressure is produced for squeezing resin into the chip. After is gets hard to tighten any more, let up on it for a moment, and then once again tighten.
The resin should dry for about a minute. But not completely before removing the entire suction apparatus. Quickly place a section of the film for finishing atop the resin. Using a razor blade, push the resin towards the film edges. Use a piece of tape to make sure the film remains in position as the resin dries.
Before taking the film off, the resin has to dry fully. Ten minutes at minimum will be required. If you do this portion too fast, you may have to add another resin drop and film strip over the chip. Scrape the repaired region with a razor blade for cleaning. The mark of success here will be if you are unable to distinguish the repair site.

You can do these steps over as many times as you like. The goal is to have the resin blend perfectly into the smoothness and surface level of the glass.
