The United States is known for a number of places, one of them is the State of California and all that it has to offer. Thousands of people crossed the west to get to California as soon as gold was discovered there. Even though most of the gold is gone, California has only grown more popular over time. For tourists and new comers, there are many things to do in Southern California and many places to see that will leave you ecstatic, no matter what your interests.

Of course, anyone can tell you just how laid back the residents of this part of the state are. One of the things this area is known for is its many celebrities and their great lifestyle. One of the reasons that they are drawn here is because Orange County has some of the most beautiful beaches in the state.

This is the area where the US Open of Surfing takes place, so that means that if you are interested in surfing or are an avid surfer, this is one destination you can't miss due to the incredible waves it offers. Even if you're not a surfer, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Pacific Ocean. Go kayaking, whale watching or sailing. You can even join a fishing expedition off the coast. Because of the warm climate, swimming pools are popular in San Diego and Orange County. No matter when you visit, you can enjoy swimming, sun bathing, beach volleyball and water polo.

Not all Southern California beaches have the right conditions for surfing. Some are ideal just for soaking up the sun and relaxing. In fact, there are miles and miles of beach to choose from along the California Pacific Coast Highway. Most of us think of sand that we can lay out on, but some beaches are rocky. These can be great locations to check out the tide pools. California isn't all coastline, though. Hiking and mountain bike enthusiasts can find plenty of moutain and canyon areas to play in. Bird watchers also have lots to see and enjoy, too!

Dining in Southern California will leave you wanting more. Of course you can sample the unique California Cuisine, but don't stop there. Because people have moved to California from all over the world, you can find good Mexican, Chinese, Thai and more. There are restaurants to fit any budget. If you don't mind spending a bit more on fine dining, you'll certainly find truly delicious dishes created by world famous chefs.

What about when the sun goes down? If you're looking for nightlife, you have plenty of options, like comedy clubs, dancing, live music and much more. There are areas that feature the trendiest spots. Just follow the young celebrities in Los Angeles! And, for art lovers, this is the place to be. Old Towne San Diego and Laguna Beach in Orange County are well known for their many art galleries and the artists who live nearby. Laguna Beach is one of the oldest art colonies in California. There's a free trolley available for gallery hoppers, and the summer is entirely devoted to art festivals.

As most of us already know, there is something magical that exists in the southern part of this fine and populated state. Its prominence in television, movies and music certainly contribute. Even someone who has never visited California has an idea of what it might be like from the Beach Boys song "California Girls" or the tv show "Baywatch".

San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura Counties all offer experiences unique to visiting Southern California. You can be sure that you won't be disappointed if you choose to visit this beautiful area.
