When choosing a wedding or engagement ring, shoppers today have a lot of choices: yellow gold, white gold, silver, platinum, titanium, etc. However, one metal that seems to be popping up at a lot of jewelry stores is tungsten. Years ago, young couples would not think of choosing any metal except gold, but that has changed. Yet, most people do not know a lot about this particular metal, except that it has a gunmetal gray color, but there is a lot more to know about tungsten rings.

Looking at the typical Table of Elements, a person will find this element under number seventy-four. It has W because its name is really Wolfram. When a shopper first sees a piece of jewelry made out of it, they will usually see it labeled as a carbide. All this means is that carbon has been mixed in to make it even more durable than it was before. This blend moves it near the top of the Mohs hardness scale for minerals. That is not the only advantage, though, so here are some more.

Cost: Everyone knows that bridal jewelry can often cost more than most can afford. However, these rings will only cost a couple of hundred dollars, on average. Does that mean lesser quality? Of course not, since the metal itself is highly durable.

Simplicity: Both men and women have so many style options when it comes to wedding bands. This can be overwhelming, which is why seeing a simple, pure metal circle can be welcoming. There are always the options that involve adding gold or stones to the ring, but a lot of people just want something simple. That is when this carbide really shines.

Durability: A diamond scores a ten on the hardness scale, and this element scores somewhere between eight and nine. That means that, after years of use, it still will not have a scratch or dent. Even titanium is not as hard. It also will never dull, which means long-lasting quality.

Hypo-allergenic: No one wants to have an allergic reaction to their wedding band mere hours after saying I Do. That is a danger with gold, silver, and platinum. This is probably one reason for the creation of these types of rings, and people with allergies are certainly better off because of it. The only reason anyone would have an allergic reaction to the carbide is if a jeweler tried to go the cheap route and add cobalt into the mix. Everyone should be careful to make sure their ring is pure.

If a tungsten ring cannot break or even scratch, it sounds like it would be impossible to get it off a someones finger in an emergency. This is totally false. Hospitals and fire stations are equipped with the tools to remove this type of jewelry. The real danger is that a marriage might not stay together as long as the rings do, because these wedding bands will be with the couple forever.
