If you are hosting a party then you need to put some thought into entertainment if you want it to be as fun as possible. Music is the most important form of entertainment at a party, so let's start with that. Think about who will be attending and what types of music appeal to them. Whilst just playing your favorites may seem like a good idea, it is not if your guests do not like them also. Using CDs is fine if you do not have much money to spend, but hiring a DJ or a band is a nice touch that your guests will love.
Depending on the type of party you have in mind, music alone might be enough entertainment, but if you want your party to be really fun and memorable then you should add other types of entertainment into the mix too. How about, for example, hiring a comedian or a magician? Look in the phonebook or search on Google as there will almost certainly be a range of entertainers in your area that you could hire. In terms of price, expect to pay around $100 for a set that last a couple of hours.
Having a quiz is generally popular too. You can download the questions (and the answers) easily enough off the Internet so you do not have to spend a long time preparing it. A 'name that tune' competition is always fun as well. Quizzes and competitions work especially well if the people attending the party do not all know each other. If you mix up the teams so that people are on a team with people that they do not know then the ice will soon be broken.
If you have a garden to make use of for your party, then it would be a shame not to use it, right? You could buy some fireworks and have a little display. It does not matter if it is the traditional time to use fireworks or not. It will actually be better if you use them 'out of season' because it will be more of a surprise for your guests. A small barbecue is a good idea too. Light it up and leave some burgers and sausages next to it and you can let people cook for themselves if they are hungry.
You do not need to go overboard and implement all of these ideas. Good music with one or two additions is all that you need to ensure that you and your guests have a great time!
