Your drive your car into your driveway. It is squealing and groaning. Finally it stops. You get out and open the hood. You see that the serpentine belt is broken. If you call a garage, they will have to tow it in. You cannot afford to pay for the tow and repair. You have to get to work. Should you consider your own car repair Orange County? Can you handle it?

Serpentine belts are relatively simple to replace, in most circumstances. In some vehicles, they may not be easy to access. However, most vehicles are not too difficult. One of the first things you can do is search online. There will usually be forums and information for your make of car. You will need a routing diagram for the new belt. There may be one under the hood. This will show you how the new belt goes on the car.

Serpentine belts are held on by a belt tensioner. It is basically a spring loaded pulley. You will also have another pulley. This is known as the idler pulley. It keeps the belt running smoothly. The tensioner can usually be released by inserting a socket driver. Some may require a wrench or socket. It is not difficult to do.

How long are you planning to keep your car? If you have no plans on replacing your car, do some preventative care. Replace the tensioner and the idler pulley. Your serpentine belt cannot work without them. If they quit, so will your car. You may be stranded somewhere in the process. Do not get the cheapest serpentine belt either. A good belt will wear long and not squeal.

Next, you can price compare, if there are more than one auto parts store nearby. You can call them for a price, or you can check out their website. Sometimes, prices will vary a lot, from place to place.

Clean everything well before you install the new belt. If you can get help, that is a plus. It is not necessary though. Make sure that the belt goes on in the right direction. Finish at the top. Press down on the tensioner. You may need to stretch the belt to get it to go on. Try a screwdriver but be very careful. Release the tensioner after the belt is securely on. You are done.

Summary

You can make your own auto repairs. Take the time to know what to do. Consider preventative care. Try to replace things before they break, if possible.
