Entering the first person shooter game market at a time of year when there are new episodes of both Halo and Call of Duty coming out might seem suicidal, but Section 8 has enough belief in itself to take the big boys of gaming on. Simple and yet subtle at the same time, it should find itself a home in the consoles of and PCs of many a dedicated gamer.

Multiplayer is the key to Section 8's confidence - a shooter can't succeed without a big and bold online element, and this game has the ability to support up to 42 players on PC and, in a first for the console, up to 32 on the Xbox 360 by using X-Servers.

While there's only one versus mode, the game does avoid the simple spawn camping that plagues many games with a more tactical way of entering the fray, in which you get an overview of the battlefield and then control over where you drop, with differing points offering obvious advantages and associated risks.

The developers have taken care to avoid annoying gameplay tactics like pogoing and running away from shots with cooldowns on the Overdrive, or super speed ability, while including all the stuff gamers like, namely really big guns.

The game has solid graphics, running as it does on the Unreal Engine 3, so while there are better visuals out there, Section 8 is by no means let down by its look. If the game can continue to attract the level of gamers that it has done so far then online games will continue to retain their fast pace, and the game will be a success.

In the single-player you play as a member of the 8th Armoured Infantry called Alex Corde. The 8th Armoured Infantry are nicknamed "Section 8" because its an old military term that describes when soldiers were discharged for being mentally unfit. Section 8 earned this name because everyone else thinks they are crazy for jumping into danger zones.

Section 8 is coming out on PC and Xbox 360 only, and is due 11th September 2009.
