The driving standards agency(DSA) set up the driving instructor register to improve the standard of driving instruction and tuition which was bieng delivered. Thier aim was to not only maintain instructor standards but to improve the level of instruction being given to student drivers.

To become an instructor you will have to pass three tests they involve different aspects of driving instruction. The theory and hazard perception test will be the first test you will have to take in order to become a driving instructor. Potential driving instructors (PDI) have to pass all three in two years from passing the first test to become qualified.

To pass the first part of the test you must score 20 ot of 25 in each section and an overall mark of 85 out of 100 to enable you to pass the initial of the test.

The hazard perception test is a video clip of a moving car and you must identify potential and developing hazards. Their is 14 clips with one of the clips containing 2 hazards. You will score 0 to 5 points depending on how fast you see the developing hazard 5 for straight away and 0 for very slow or not at all. you must score 59 out of 75 to pass the test.

If you are successful in passing the two parts of the first test this will allow you to progress on to a test of your driving ability. this will mean you are one step closer to becoming a driving instructor

Part 2 is known as the advanced driving test. The test itself last around an hour taking in various road conditions with a senior examiner. To pass this test you must commit less than seven minor faults and no serious faults. If you are successful in step 2 you would then be allowed to undertake a trainee licence to allow you to prepare for the third test and most difficult test of instructor ability.

On the final examination you will be accompanied by a senior examiner who will pretend to be a learner at different stages. The tests lasts one hour and is in two parts. the first consists of the examinar playing a pupil at the beginner stage and the second at the partly trained. He/She will make different faults and you not only need to identify these faults but to correct them.

You can attempt the first test as many times as you like but part 2 and 3 you are allowed only three attempts if you fail either three times you will have to resit all three test again after a waiting period of two years.
