Pandora is more than just a moon of Saturn. In fact, it is also a well known Danish jewellery designer. Today it's predominantly known for its creation of charms and associated charm jewellery. Pandora has produced literally hundreds of different varieties of charms that are sold around the world. These charms are undoubtedly the company's top seller, but they also make other lines of jewellery too. These include earrings, anklets, pendants and watches.
So how did Pandora begin? The company's origins start with Danish couple Per and Winnie Enevoldsen. Per was originally a goldsmith. He opened up a jewellery store in Copenhagen in 1982. During this time Per and Winnie would fly to Thailand where they would source jewellery. These trips would provide them with products to sell back home in their shop.
It proved to be a successful venture. This is why they founded their own overseas production plant in 1984. The idea was that they could make a name for themselves through joint ventures in retail and wholesale. The production facility was dubbed Pandora Productions. The range of jewellery it was to produce would be designed and conceived by new recruit Lone Frandsen.
The name Pandora Productions had become known simply as "Pandora" by 1987. The plant had been relocated back to Denmark and the couple established a head office in Copenhagen. The business also decided to cease retailing and operate solely as a wholesaler and jewellery designer.
Lisbeth En Larsen was recruited in 1996 to help Lone Frandsen come up with a unique jewellery line. They needed to come up with something that could be used to define Pandora as a brand.
They struck gold in 2000 with the unveiling of the first line of Pandora charms and charm bracelets. The timing could not have been better because charm bracelets were becoming fashionable once more. Pandora used the slogan "one charm for every unforgettable moment in your life" to accompany the launch of their bracelets. This helped to capture the imagination of the public and set Pandora charms apart from their rivals. The charms themselves were made from very good quality materials. These included 14 carat gold charms and also charms made from sterling silver. There was also a selection of beautifully coloured murano glass charms. These had been hand made on the island of Murano in Italy. This Venetian island is renowned for its hand-blown glass. The charms were a big hit on release. This was largely down to the huge selection on offer combined with the quality and affordable price tag.
An added benefit was the simple fact that each and every charm was designed with Pandora's patented threading technique. This meant that each charm would have to be twisted over the end of the Pandora bracelet to safeguarded it. This resulted in being a clever tactic by Pandora. It provided a failsafe that purchasers could basically only screw their Pandora charms onto a corresponding bracelet. Pandora charms simply would not fit onto rival brand. Other types of charm wouldn't work on Pandora bracelets either. Once you were a Pandora customer, it made sense to stay a Pandora customer.
