Most if not all customer audio systems are adjusted so that everything with be richer as well as crisp which is great for the consumer. As an audio engineer it is not beneficial as it will alter music you are working on. You may attempt balance your own music to make up for this, when it is not needed or preferred. Even worse when your client or fans listen to the music it will not sound good. Whenever laboring on music as an "audio engineer" the goal is simply to make sure that it is "transferable". What this means is that when you listen a song it will sound good almost anywhere on any form of music player from an Ipod touch to a home theater.

This is where studio monitors come into play because they strive to not change the audio in an ideal world they would have a "flat frequency responds" meaning "no change in any way of any frequency". No monitor is perfect however they will be much less adjusted then customer devices. In home studios and professional studios a pair of studio monitors ( otherwise known as reference monitors ) are used , and in many cases multiple models to choose from so that you can refer to material as it iis recorded and mixed to aid with transferability.

There are a range of studio monitors how will you select the right one for yourself? Initially set up how much you are planning to pay for a pair of studio monitors. Monitors can range from $200 to $10,000. This is why a financial budget is essential as you can very quickly use up all your money.

When I did this I budgeted of $200-$400 for my monitors. In the world of reference monitors this will likely fall under the inexpensive studio monitor group; but it surely was reasonable for what I could afford to pay for. Remember you will need some wires to hook them up to your audio interface so make sure to budget for this.

Given that you have a price range it is time to start performing a bit of research. I started out looking on the net searching for "studio monitors" and "reference monitors". I invested time on music forms like Gearslutz and the womb to acquire different folks thinking. I even questioned other engineers and audio pupils as well .
