The design and popularity of charm bracelets has certainly evolved over time. Gone are the days when they were crude little things bought by soldiers as souvenirs. These charms were low-quality and cheap to make. The idea was simply to have a memento of a different time and place. It was during the 1950s that the idea of collecting charms really took hold. However, the target group for these charms were children, not adults. These kids enjoyed the collectible aspect of the charms.

However, today's batch of charm bracelets are primarily created in Europe. And the vast majority of charm designers are based in Denmark. It was during the seventies that the brand called Trollbeads prompted the rebirth of this fashion. This set the stage for a new kind of charm bracelet. They were sleeker and of better quality. Instead of the charms clipping onto the bracelets, the new ones were made with hollow centres. This allowed them to slide onto a corresponding bracelet. The current market leader, Pandora, saw an opportunity in this new design. They developed a threaded format for their charms which prevented them fitting on bracelets belonging to rival brands. This ensured that once a customer bought a bracelet and charm from Pandora they would remain loyal to the company. The new system also meant that charms were attached more securely to bracelets and were easier to slide on and off.

In addition, the majority of charm makers provide various clips and spacers. A clip is a smaller sized charm that stays in a fixed placement on the bracelet. It is a way the customer can grouping charms together on their bracelet. These new forms of charm design are employed by companies such as Links of London, Aagaard and Lovelinks.

Europe definitely leads the way in charm bracelet manufacturing. However, the trend is now taking off in Canada And America. The major draw of these more modern charm lines is the flexibility they offer the wearer. Bracelets remain available to buy as chain links, which can take a limited number of hanging charms. But the solid silver or gold bracelets are the most common. These bracelets allow the charms to be twisted on. These are also available to buy in polished silver, oxidised silver and fabrics such as leather.

Likewise the charms are made out of a number of different resources. This can have a knock on effect with regards to their sale price. Most charms are manufactured from sterling silver. But there are also a wide range made from murano glass and wood and 14k gold.
