Almost every school child will have those wistful dreams of being a rock and roll God and emulating their musical icons that sit immortalized in posters on their bedroom walls while they're young. They argue about whom the undisputed king of the guitar is when they're infants and it's more often than not a debate that continues well into adulthood. Who are the most popular, well known and influential though that regularly make it to the top of these lists?
The first on the list is one that any list true to tradition and opinion would be null and void without, Eric Clapton. One of the truest talents to grace us with his music some of his biggest hits include Layla, Cocaine and White Room. Born and bred in the UK he endured turbulent times during his life and had an immense passion for blues music.
The accolades achieved by Eric Clapton are numerous and you could compile an entire list dedicated solely just to them! They include: 17 Grammy awards, three inductions into the Rock and Roll hall of fame and also a CBE which was awarded to Clapton in recognition of his services to the world of music. His ride to the top was far from smooth though as he was an abuser of alcohol and drugs. As a result of this and his struggles he founded a medical centre for recovering alcoholics and substance abusers, only adding to his status and unrivaled popularity.
Another name which is impossible to miss off any of these lists is Jimi Hendrix. With his group The Jimi Hendrix Experience he achieved world dominance, a feat made even more impressive considering he was only on the mainstream for a total of four years before his tragic demise. In addition to his music and rather more unfortunately so he was also a substance abuser, known for his partying antics; drinking, drugs and alcoholism. His death was the cause of a lot of controversy too with the suspicious reports and changing stories that surrounded it, his success and reputation as one of the world's best electric guitarists though is as of yet, unsurpassed.
Finally we come on to the iconic front man of Guns N Roses, Slash. Guns N Roses' first album sold an eye watering 28 million copies when it was released, something which at the time of its release was almost unthinkable. He also went on to solo success releasing two albums and has been conducted in to the rock and roll hall of fame.
