Laughter certainly is the best medicine, but not everyone knows how to get it just right. In fact, the fault often lies with both the comedian and the audience. One of the worst situations imaginable for a comedian is having to suffer joke explanation. Whether you have to do it yourself, or someone chimes in on your behalf, if it is being explained then it was not successful.

There are many benefits of jokes. Laughter is the main side-effect, but they are also very effective at making people think differently about topical and controversial subjects. You don't have to be a stand-up comedian to use jokes and many people find that they are a great ice-breaker or method for building rapport.

On an individual level the pressure to deliver good jokes on a regular basis is greatly reduced. However, if you are a funny person, then people will have expectations and it would be a shame to disappoint them. If you enjoy telling your friends jokes then use this opportunity to try out some of your more sensitive or controversial material. They will be a more lenient audience than most.

If you use comedy at work and with different clients then it is very important to be careful with your choice of material. Some people can be very sensitive and it is difficult to know how they will react unless you know them very well. Avoid controversial subjects and try to remain professional at all times, even if you are telling a joke.

Some people have a natural talent for getting away with practically anything. For those people comedy is an excellent career as others know not to take offense at their jokes. However, this is not the case with everyone, so it is best to tread carefully and try not to offend anyone with your choice of material.

There is nothing worse than someone who constantly makes jokes because he or she feels awkward. Some situations are not suitable for joke-telling and the best comedians know when to be sensitive and when to try to ease the atmosphere with a good giggle. Try to be sensitive to other people's feelings and then you will learn when it's a suitable time for comedy.

The obvious trick to comedy is not having to explain anything. As soon as someone shows a confused face you know you have failed. The more complicated the joke is, the more likely the audience are to get confused. However, if the comedy is too simplistic then it might lack that comedic value. Comedy is a talent that not everyone possesses.

If you think that you are funny, but aren't 100% sure then ask your friends for their honest opinion. In some cases they will be laughing along at your jokes so as to not hurt your feelings. In other cases it is more a case of the person being funny, than the jokes. Not everyone will laugh at every joke and it is a very subjective business. The main thing to avoid is joke explanation and then you know you have made it as a comedian.
