The origin of the concept of the Universe as Divine Expression is lost in time, but it has always been widely held, with the idea that there is nothing which is not God. Initially this may seem an unrealistic idea, especially to scientifically-minded individuals. Closer examination, however, reveals a scientific basis to this idea.

If everything were indeed part of the Creator, it would mean that everything must consist ultimately of the same substance. This would seem nonsensical, had it not been shown that everything that exist is made from energy, and there is no reason to suppose that this doesn't hold throughout this Reality. This includes light, sound and even thought is energy-based.

However, by personifying this Energy, religions are implying that this Energy which underlies everything is conscious. Science has not been able to determine when consciousness first arose, but it is assumed to have a spontaneous origin. There is no evidence that it was not always present from the very beginning, and this is certainly as likely as any other scenario, given the lack of any objective evidence.

It could be argued that inanimate objects are not obviously conscious, but as what constitutes consciousness is not clear, this is hard to determine. It is quite possible that this phenomenon might not be confined to objects which are alive, but is common to all. Without a clear understanding of what consciousness is, and in the absence of equipment to measure it, there is no practical way to decide.

Assuming that the whole Universe stems from an expression of Divine Consciousness, helps understand why looking at the heavens can evoke such an impression of its general awesomeness. This serves to stimulating awareness of its true nature. Allied feelings can arise from contemplating other natural marvels, where everything can be viewed as partaking of the miraculous.

The implications of this underlying basis to Reality are similarly far-reaching. Events are surely also then similarly interrelated. Instead of the common human habit of judging occurrences on an individual, immediate basis, understanding would require a broader perspective. Whether an event may seem to be immediately good or bad is actually an irrelevant judgement: everything that happens must also have its perfect place in the Creation. Adopting this way of looking at whatever happens can reduce the perceived level of threat and animosity.

although it may not always be intuitively obvious, attitudes are a result of a personal choice based on a particular viewpoint. Changing the viewpoint is a simple matter, and changes the attitude as well. Being too enmeshed with an event leads to an unbalanced view, so it is helpful to choose a perspective which is helps to make better sense of an event, and minimizes the feeling of being a helpless victim of Fate.

The ability to see everything as a whole, every part having its own place and all being equally necessary, puts a proper perspective on events. This can then give greater peace of mind, and people become less victims and more important participants in events. In this way the concept of Divine Expression helps produce greater serenity and acceptance, and improves mental health.
