MMORPB is the acronym for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Play(ing) Game, and can be briefly described as a type of computer game that is played online and participated in by players all over the world who has access to a computer.

In most MMORPGs the player takes the role of his or her own character and must navigate some sort of world or realm in order to complete quests and tasks. A website serves as the host of this world or realm, and players enters this existing world to act the roles they have chosen and pursue the tasks or quests that they have set for themselves. In effect, the make believe world will have a life of each own even if a player is inactive. This is known as being "real time" and is how they emulate the real world.

A case in point is where a player was inflicted with some kind of an ill will which causes physical harm that proved to also take its toll on other players. Players panicked and sought refuge in cities and towns as the disease ran rampant and seemingly out of control. Even though the panic was later brought under control, players were struck by the similarities of the reactions in a virtual and real world.

MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and Guildwars have fantasy and mythical themes with an abundance of magical spells and super powers. Some are based in space, where you must command a spacecraft or your own planet. Some are even based on the real world, and with the invention of Google maps it may well be possible to have an MMORPG world which closely emulates the real world, perhaps even being able to visit your own home!

MUDs, or Multi-User Dungeons, were the first. They are usually simple text based programs where the players use commands to control and interact with their character, the world, and other players. The game is comparatively simple compared to the latter games, but are also played with 2D graphical versions and 3D MUDs. The browser based MMORPGs are somewhat similar to MUDs, and are played only in the user's browser, e.g, RuneScape. The programs of these are text based, and some are in 3Ds, and just like the newer MMORPGs are practical to use, and most can be played for free.

MMORPGs gained prominence about a decade ago and are today a popular choice of many online players. Worldwide, they are earning billions and the total take is rising year after year.
