Music is a strange thing. Many people enjoy it for its quality, its artistic value and for many other reasons. Some people have such a passion for the subject that they will choose to study it in university. The music industry also makes quite a lot of money, and those who work within this particular industry often find themselves becoming quite wealthy. There has been a lot of controversy lately, however, when it comes to the likes of piracy. There are many people who download copyrighted material illegally, and those within the industry itself often claim that this is preventing artists from getting the rewards they deserve. Regardless, finding new music has become a lot easier these days.
One thing that you can do to help you find new music is to use a search engine on the internet. Sounds pretty obvious, but there are some best practices that will yield better results for you. First, I would suggest searching on terms that describe bands that you currently enjoy such as, "bands like (insert a band here)" or "bands with violins". You can also do what I call deep searches. People very rarely go beyond the first page in a search result. Sometimes I like to start the search by jumping straight to page 5 or 10. This can sometimes put you on music that is good but far less popular.
Some email providers such as Gmail will allow you to set up email alerts. Alerts can be set up so that any time a particular keyword or phrase is mentioned on a website or news sites, an email will be sent to you. These can be configured to send you an email once per day or once per week. You can input keywords such as "Los Angeles bands" or "new ska band" and your alerts will pick the best news about those topics and send you what almost looks like a news letter.
Video sites such as Youtube, Viddler, and Vimeo are video search engines. These sites can be used the same way you would use a regular search engine. Try searching things with geographic locations as modifiers, such as "Chicago punk band" or "Utah jam band". Not only can you find new artists, but the videos of interviews and live performances can give you a great look into the style and character of a group. You can also browse through the music category in the browse tab. This will pull up the popular music videos being watched, but feel free to take the search deep, going 5, 10, 20 pages in on the search. This will allow you to dig up some gold nuggets in the music industry and provide you with plenty of listening pleasure.
