Friday Night Lights was absolute TV gold that never got the recognition it deserved. Despite having some great characters and plots, the viewing figures never took off and it ended up finishing its last season in February 2011. Here are some of the reasons why it will be sorely missed.
Firstly, it had some fantastic plot lines. Friday Night Lights wasn't afraid to tackle subjects that other TV shows would have run a mile from, like drugs, abortion and racism. Moreover, it did this in a way that was realistic and true to the middle America it was trying to portray
It also tackled some serious subjects in a smart and compelling way without trivialising them. Issues such as substance abuse, abortion and even lifelong disability were all deeply explored with the characters, and the actors on board did a fantastic job. Some, such as Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, who played coach Taylor and his wife respectively, even won awards for their performances.
Finally, it is one of the very few TV series to be made off the back of a film and still be successful. Usually, adaptations and spin-offs never match up to the original, but Friday Night Lights was not only made off the back of a movie, but that movie was made off the back of a book and it still managed to do justice to, if not surpass the previous incarnations.
The show itself got a great critical reception, winning numerous awards including a Peabody and multiple Emmys. However, it never got the ratings figures to match the critical success, and left our screens in February 2011, though it is sure to remain a classic for years to come.
