There are lots of genres of music with each claiming its distinct fans. African American societies in the US claim the sole responsibility as the originators of the style. It is taken to be a traditional genre considering a multicultural community that forms its background. Jazz music came into play in late 19th century. It sprung in numerous parts of the Unites States in form of not only new but independent musical technique.

It is generally hard to describe this style since it consists of a variation of music spreading over 100 years. Most individuals usually attempt to describe it from the perspective of other musical traditions such as European music or African music, though the definition is sometimes broader. The descriptions vary according to different people with others preferring the broader definition and others going for the narrower form.

The style makes use of syncopation, swung note, polyrhythms, and improvisation. It has aspects of American popular music, brass tradition, and European harmony. In addition, to the above it has African musical elements like ragtime and blue notes. Jazz drew on various local, national, and regional musical cultures resulting to several distinct styles during its spread around the world.

Each style of music has important role that it serves in the industry apart from the obvious entertainment one. One of the functions it served was unification of people, especially its supporters irrespective of their age difference. This style has been a huge leveler and social unifier and is still regarded as such. Jazz sustained and generated artistic subcultures, which are responsible for advanced and new artistry.

It helped bring to attention the black culture and history. This historical role can never be forgotten. The other role it served is that of highlighting the contribution of blacks to American society. Others associate this term with racist and oppressive society where restrictions were the order of the days. To others it reminds them of failed artistic visions due to the situation of the days back then.

Supporters of the genre grew considerably with the growth of live band performances and recording firms. It is usually connected with clubs or nightlife. Performers and professionals in the field travel globally performing at all sorts of venues ranging from hotels to dance halls. Previously a strict color bar was in effect and artists were expected to adhere to this all the time. The break through came when swing jazz was introduced as it led to global integration.

Part of development of the style saw entry of female innovators and artists in a field otherwise dominated by male singers. Back in 1920s women solely served as instrumentalists. Female artists were unpopular because they were entrusted with lesser roles like pianists. Female singers took over from men after they were enlisted for war and still appear to this day. Bands with female artists began appearing during World War One.

To finish, throughout evolution the genre continues to claim talented and innovative artists who continuously reinvent and reshape it. It is spread globally in every continent and claims great legacy. It has had several legends down its line who served a great role shaping it to what it is nowadays. The harmonies, engaging rhythms, and rich melodies are some of things that make it special.
