Christian country, rock and hip-hop have become rather popular over the last several decades. Prior to that time, gospel, especially southern gospel had a hold on the faithful. With bands and songs like Hinsons The Lighthouse, groups worked to spread the message of Jesus, hope, faith and love all around the world. The music, while framed in Christianity, has often been enjoyed by people of varying beliefs.

Founded first in 1967, the band and music represent a somewhat nostalgic version of southern gospel. After having performed live for the first time that very same year, the band became better known. If not for having played a revival in Freedom, California, it is unclear as to the whether or not the band would have found success.

Shortly after appearing in California, the group found bookings at churches and auditoriums up and down the west coast. Later, the band moved on to a shorter version by simply identifying as The Hinsons. The Lighthouse became the signature song of the group when one of the brothers came back with the title and lyrics on a piece of toilet paper in 1970. After the group discussed the need for new material, Ronny, one of the brothers seem to disappear for several minutes then returned with the song which had apparently been written during a short bathroom visit. While first recorded by The Goodmans, The Hinsons also recorded the song shortly thereafter.

Then, came Elvis, and a rendition that would garner air play on radio stations near and far. After which, the song quickly became a huge hit, with singles hitting the market. As this edition came out during the Viet Nam War, the song also gave hope to a world which often felt all hope was lost at the time. Now, with social networking and video sharing sites, the band The Hinsons and The Lighthouse have been reborn.

Some like the sermons which often accompany live shows while others find the message rather annoying. The group, having once hosted The Gospel Jubilee, a television show in the late 60s early 70s, seem to have better success with regards to studio recordings than live shows. Most believe the lack of interest in concert performances is most likely due to the sermons which often precede the music.

Regardless of the lack of interest in live shows, the group never gave up. In the 1970s, the group began recording music which many thought more modern at the time. Others, seem to think the band had taken on a more progressive country sound which was also quite popular at the time. Whether southern gospel, country, rock and roll or undefined, the band has now uploaded many new and historic songs for fans to enjoy.

There are still many groups which remain undefinable when it comes to genre. Now with the ability to reach people world-wide through YouTube and other audio and video sharing sites, the music, like the band have now been reborn. The band, now reformed, hopes to garner a new audience ripe and ready for an old message delivered in ways new and historic.
