The German company produced the first Porsche model which was Porsche 64. But since it didn't have a mass production, it was the Porsche 356 that was considered to be the first production of Porsche and was even sold from 1948 to 1965. The 364 model was made Ferry Porsche together with his father Ferdinand Porsche. Furthermore, the engine of the car was derived from a Volkswagen Beetle.
The models available were initially coupe, cabriolet (luxury convertible) and then roadster (a stripped down convertible). Before being withdrawn in 1965, it went through several changes. The most desirable versions were 356 "Carrera" (often sold for well over $150,000), "Super 90" and "Speedster". In the late 50`s, the original selling price for a Porsche was $4,000.
The only importer of Porsche in the United States, Max Hoffman wants a lower cost in 1954. Therefore, Porsche made the Speedster model that captured the attention of countless individuals. Its superb features include the bucket seats, the minimal folding top and the raked windshield that is easily removable when used on races. This model is so enticing that it was seen on different films like Top Gun, 48 Hours and Another 48 Hours. It is sold today for a minimum of $100,000.
It was in 1957 when Speedster models were as many as 1,171 but was substituted by the Convertible D in 1959. The Convertible D now has a taller windshield with glass side windows and the seats are now more comfortable to use.
The Porsche 356's shape did not change for many years and can easily be distinguished by many people although there were other modifications. The 356 B Roadster was produced as well until 1963 wherein the last model was turned to 356 C. This final model now has disc brakes and the powerful 95HP 'SC'.
Two major events took place in 1964. First was the launching of 911 and second, the production of Porsche 356 went as high as 14,151 vehicles. In the late 1965, the 356 C was still sold but at a lower price in North America. Several customers complained with the high price of the 911 so the 912 was produced where the engine of the 356 was used. Furthermore, it was sold from the year 1965 until 1969.
56 years after the beginning of the production, Sports Car International named 356C number ten on the list of Top Sports cars of the 60`s. Today, the 356 is a respected car among the collectors, as it stood the test of time. Worldwide, thousands of 356 owners maintain the tradition, preserving their cars and driving them regularly.
