Most motorcycle riders will often need to buy and replace certain components. There are a couple of places to begin your search when you are searching for components to fit to an older bike. Sourcing spares can take a long time and in many cases you may not get a match to the existing parts. When you are trying to find rare items it is worth taking a photograph of the old one so that comparisons can be made.

There are now online retailers that specialize in Harley spares and components. Most of these companies will have thousands of spares in stock for some very old motorcycles. The adverts will normally show a picture of the spare part and a fully detailed description with its price and other information.

Visiting a Harley Davidson approved dealer can often be a good idea when trying to locate hard to find items. Dealers will usually have thousands of new bike parts in their store room and even though they do not advertise older stock they may still be able to supply you with what you need. If they cannot supply the item they still may have some colleagues who work in the same field who can help.

Scrap dealers are also a good place to go on a hunt for hard to find items. Many motorcycles that have been taken off the road can be found piled up in junk yards. Many of these companies will strip the bike down and put the spares on shelves ready to sell but it is worth taking along some basic tools in case you need to remove components from a scrap bike.

Bikers associations and Harley Davidson clubs are another place to go looking for rarer bits and pieces. Members of these clubs will frequently sell or swap unwanted items with other members at knock down prices. If you are not a member it is still worth sending them an email or telephoning them to see if they can be of any assistance and help with your searches.

When you have located the items and fitted them it can often be useful to retain the old bits. These can sometimes be refurbished or fixed and sold, swapped or donated to other bikers trying to find rare items. Some items may need a professional to inspect them after repair especially brake components and gas tanks.

If you have to replace things it is preferable to use genuine spares when possible. Many companies produce aftermarket spares which are compatible but using these may affect the value of your bike should you decide to sell it on. Some clubs will also not allow you to enter a bike into display shows if it is not factory specification so this is worth bearing in mind.
