The 1930s saw a spurt of interest in fantasy writers from readers. Many of these readers have become ardent followers of these fantasy writers. In honor of the genre, here is a list of the possibly best fantasy books of all time that one should best read.

J. R. R. Tolkien started the whole ball rolling when he wrote The Hobbit. In this book, the writer brought forth his imagination that have basically defined what is the structure and element of the fantasy genre to this day. Without this book, we would have no idea about elves, orcs, goblins, trolls and many other creatures that have been copied and pasted into many other fantasy stories we see today.

The Two Towers and the Return of the King later followed the Hobbit as books completing the legendary trilogy of Tolkien. This trilogy has become well known as of late being made into a major movie and all. It has already made quite a huge cosplay following with people even talking imaginary languages like Elven and Orcish.

The Belgariad and the Mallorean are also two noteworthy series written by the late David Eddings. He, like Tolkien also used the method of having more than one novel making up the story, although each book can stand on its own.

The Belgariad is a tale comprised of five volumes. The story begins with the Pawn of Prophecy, and these and the other books are unique in that they affected the Dungeons and Dragons game in the 1980s as their unique plots were borrowed by some game designers for the tabletop based game. It is also one of the few stories that lets the reader rely heavily on maps so as not to get lost in the story.

The Narnia series of C. S. Lewis in the 1930s should not be left out of the discussion either. This huge compilation of linear stories comprising seven books has a following across every age level. It starts with the iconic the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe and ends with the last book, aptly titled, The Last Battle.

The unforgettable characters coming out of myth and legend, as well as everyday animals that talk, lend to the appeal of the Narnia series. This has caught on very well with young readers and stayed with them throughout their adult lives. Everyone at some point in their lives have seen these books in their bedroom as bought by their parents, that is if your parents really love to read.

The ones by the three authors above easily qualify to be the best fantasy books of all time. This is due to their timeless appeal and the way they can cut through age barriers for the fantasy reader or enthusiast. Not many stories can match the distinction of having an appeal that goes beyond one generation or one time era only. Imagine a book that is enjoyed and giving the same kind of entertainment in 1930 having the same effect on a reader in 2012, not many can match that power.
