London is going to be an exciting place to be in 2012. Anyone who loves a good time will be planning city breaks in England to be part of the excitement as London becomes the party-hearty capitol of the world. Between the Queens Diamond Jubilee in June and the Olympics in July and August there will be plenty to celebrate.
The Olympics are held only once in four years so they are a big event wherever they happen. The Olympics have been held in England only twice before so the XXX Olympiad is a very big deal to Londoners. Royal Diamond Jubilees are even more rare. The last one was in 1897. It makes sense that everyone who wants to watch history in the making will want to be in London in 2012.
There will be lots more going on than just the main events. Everybody who does something or sells something or just likes to party will want to ride the wave. Count on special exhibits, sales, concerts and of course street parties.
Summer of 2012 will be a great time to be in London except for people who don't like crowds. If you aren't planning to go to any of the Olympic events and you figure you can get a better view of the Jubilee pageantry on TV why not escape? People are going to be offering top dollar for accommodations. Why not rent out your house or flat and make a break for it?
Some people think a break from routine necessarily means going someplace rural or maritime. But if you like city energy and urban culture you can still get a change of scene by going to another city. Liverpool is a great place to go for a few hours or a few days. High speed train will get you there in a couple of hours.
A lot of people know nothing about Liverpool except that it's where the Beatles started. But it's a city with a rich history and plenty of contemporary culture. The Pier Head Waterfront was selected by UNESCO for the designation of World Heritage site. Shopping and museums by day give way to clubs and concerts at night.
York is another great choice for a quick getaway. A street named Shambles is considered by Google the most picturesque in Britain. History preserved in the architecture, museums and antique shops goes back to the Romans, the Vikings and the Saxons. It's a great city for walking. Take the Wall Walk during the day and then come out after dark and join the Ghost Walk.
