For the truly gifted musician, the top 5 music conservatories in the US offer a musical education that is unrivaled and sure to develop an artist to the heights of their potential. These institutions rate at the very best in various fields when compared to the hundreds of other programs in America. The level of discipline and skill required to be accepted and later graduate from any of these conservatories gives alumni the best possibility of a career as a professional musician.

The Juilliard School is arguably the most renowned art school in the world. The institution has been providing first class training to artists since it was established in 1905. Its downtown New York City location makes it an ideal spot for students to hone their trade, audition for gigs, and meet others that share their passion. The success of Juilliard is shown in famous alumni, such as violinist Yo Yo Ma.

Boston, Massachusetts boasts the New England Conservatory (NEC). The NEC delights New Englanders year round with concerts in the famous Jordan Hall, an acoustic masterpiece. The NEC, which is the United States' longest running independent musical institution, offers its students diploma programs and Bachelor through Doctoral degrees.

The University of Rochester offers musicians an education through the Eastman School of Music. The conservatory ranks number one in many of its programs, such as composition and piano performance. Other highly respected genres include orchestra conducting, jazz, and opera.

Further South on the East Coast is The Curtis Institute of Music. The Philadelphia-based school is very exclusive, and offers full scholarships to all students - regardless of financial situation. This significantly reduces the burden on the students, although they're still expected to pay for their living expenses if they can afford to do so - needs-based assistance is available if not.

Finally, the Cleveland Institute of Music gives musicians the opportunity to get off the East Coast, where most conservatories are clustered. CIM has a close association with the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra, with many orchestra members serving as faculty. The Cleveland Institute of Music offers degrees through its partnership with Case Western Reserve University.

In the end, prospective students should submit applications to as many schools as possible. All of the top 5 music conservatories in the US are highly selective and maintain low admission rates. Applying to a variety of colleges gives musicians the highest chance of being accepted. It is also important to consider factors such as location, average class size, and fields of study. Applicants should review which genres each conservatory excels at and apply to those that suit their interests.
