In order to start to play guitar songs, you will need to begin playing with a tuned guitar. If you don't, when you try your song, it won't sound like the song you thought your were trying to play. You will also need to become skilled at reading the guitar tabs in order to play guitar songs.

If you would like to play guitar songs, then you don't only want to know of the tabs, but you will need to learn to listen to a song like the professionals do. The very first step you need to make is to listen very purposefully to all of the songs you want to play. If you are just beginning, you need to stick with songs that are simpler to play, such as 3-chorded songs, using simple chords.

When you are trying to memorize and listen carefully to a song, make sure you are getting a feel for the rhythm and the overall timing of when the chords are played, and when the strings are being picked. When you simply make time to listen for a while, then you should follow the song as it's played by reading the appropriate tabs. Repeat this practice on a song you want to learn, noting rhythm.

Once you've done this process a number of times, and then followed along using your guitar tab, you should take the next step. Pick up your guitar and then simply strum along. Don't play so loud that you can't hear the music as it's playing, you still need to learn the original song.

The final step when you've more or less become an expert in the timing as well as the strumming of this song, is to play without the music being played - try it solo. Turn the music on when you draw a blank and need to refresh your memory. You need to practice one song at a time. Master the song you are trying to play, then you can move on to the next. You know you're ready to move to another song once you can sing and play at once.

One other great tip is to record yourself playing with a video camera. When you complete the song, then view yourself on the television. The point is to see your mistakes, and more or less become your own coach.

Make it a point to follow these tips and soon enough you will learn to play guitar songs. Don't lose heart to do so, and make sure you practice patience as well. Do not be too hard on yourself when you make mistakes, this is normal. If you keep repeating some mistake, you will need to take a break before you get too frustrated. Frustration only breeds more mistakes.
