While most people believe only great artists can learn how to play guitar by ear, in fact any determined student can. Nothing beats jamming by ear to your music collection: you can concentrate on having fun instead of remembering tablature or music sheets. Anyone interested in learning this skill will learn a lot from these simple steps.

Practice on the piano keyboard

The layout of the keyboard, designed for accessibility, is far more suited for novices to practice with than a guitar. The keys are easy to see whereas the guitar was designed as a portable instrument, making it more complex. Advanced musicians aside, students should learn by taking advantage of the piano.

Develop the necessary skills

Before you can play by ear you will need to learn to listen properly to music and practice your singing. Listen to the entire song: engross yourself in it and watch how specific parts arouse specific emotions in you. Then sing the song until you can hear and anticipate the melody in your mind. The more you sing, the more proficient you will become at hitting the right pitch. The final skill to learn will be to hit the right notes when you are attempting to play your song. For this, learning a major scale pattern or two will be the perfect aid.

Find a song in C major

If you are trying to play a song in C major on the piano, you can hit any white key to get the correct note. Pick a song in C major, find the starting note, and then try to figure out the notes that follow by listening to the song and asking yourself if the next note is higher or lower. In no time you will master it, and it will only get easier with practice. Stick with songs in C major until your ear develops.

Play the melody on guitar

The next step is to learn a major scale. Practice until you can play it smoothly. To play your chosen song in C major on guitar, look up the tabs and look at the position of the first three notes. Then put the tabs away. Listen to the tune and sing along to it. Then play the opening three notes and try to figure out the fourth by deciding if it is higher or lower than the previous. Here you can make use of your knowledge of a major scale; it will help you find the notes. The most important tip is not to over-think it. These steps might sound difficult; but, rest assured, they are not.

Diversify your majors and scales to find patterns

As you improve your skill level, do not forget that playing by ear means discovering patterns in notes, not relying on muscle memory. Imagine where your desired notes are relative to the scales you learn, not the placement of your fingers on the fretboard. Mastering all CAGED positions will help keep your imagination flowing.

As you improve your ear for music, you will pick up tunes faster. Once you can play guitar by ear, not only will you get the pleasure of exceeding your expectations when you garner a skill you did not think you could, you can apply that confidence to changing your overall perception of your abilities.
